It depends how you are using your facebook. If you don't want the world to know about, you shouldn't post it on facebook. The disadvantage you list could be eliminated simply by not posting or behaving in a way that would reflect you in a negative light to employers. Or, you could keep your facebook private and not allow none friends to view, if an employer requests an add simply do a "employer friendly" clean up and delete anything you think may affect your job or chances at a job. Then I see no disadvantages, and the network possibilities are clearly the advantage. In my opinion the benefit can outweigh the cons but just like with everything else in life it's all in how you use it.

I use facebook for keeping in touch with friends !
I don't live near many of my friends and nowhere near my family so it's great for me if I've done something or been somewhere to just upload recent photo's to show them. It's easy to keep in contact with people I wouldn't normally have big conversations with as we can leave short messages on the wall rather than write a long email or have a game of scrabble with them! I like that I can be quite casual and informal about all of this.
As for those who post up all their information, photo's of themselves drunk and add friends they don't know I think they might need to wise up quite a bit on Internet safety.
i've never understood those people who like to sit at home in their underwear, bikini or skimpy dresses and take photo's of themselves from 'jaunty' angles (you know the one's - with their eyes looking off to some corner in the distance, lips stuck out) and put them online or have them as their profile pictures. As someone mentioned in an earlier answer, it's showing off, perhaps they're trying to show that they have a fun life and add people they don't know to look like they've got loads of friends and are popular. I agree with you, it is phony. I don't see the point of having this kind of profile, I just see it as another tool of communication.
