Hello,
No respectable newspaper would publish an article about a missing nose.
At least, that’s what Major Kovalyov is told — and it has probably been a while since that statement has been proved wrong.
Kovalyov is the main character of Shostakovich’s 1930 opera “The Nose,” adapted from a short story by Gogol of the same name that had its Metropolitan Opera premiere Friday night. Already a brilliant meeting of minds between author and composer, the performance gained an extra layer of effectiveness in a production by South African artist William Kentridge.
Major Kovalyov awakes to find a crucial facial feature has vanished. Disbelief gives way to panic and despair as the nose becomes an officer with a higher rank and refuses to acknowledge the face and body to which it had belonged. An absurdist commentary on social standing and bureaucracy, the opera lacks emotional thrust and sometimes wanders as it pans over vast swatches of a sick society.
thanks!!
